On June 8, a 31-year-old woman was brutally attacked and killed in broad daylight. The alleged perpetrator, a 36-year-old man, wielded a sword as he assaulted the victim while she was on her way to work on a seemingly ordinary Saturday. Police have identified the victim as Baljinder Kaur of Fatehpur Jattan village, which is near Morinda. She had been working in a call centre in Industrial Area Phase VII for around nine years. Police arrested the primary accused, Sukchain Singh, who worked at a petrol pump in Samrala town and attempted to flee the scene after the murder.

Man Stabs Woman In Broad Daylight

Witnesses and security camera footage showed the horrific sequence of events as the attacker, with a sword, chased the woman down the street. The brazen nature of the attack, which took place in full view of the public, sent shockwaves across the city. Three police officers were also injured while attempting to catch the attacker. The police additionally confiscated the murder weapon from him.

According to the police investigation, Baljinder Kaur was getting out of an autorickshaw and was heading towards her office when the accused, who was already there, struck her at least 12–13 times with a sword, leaving her critically injured on the busy road. The assault occurred in full front of the public, who did nothing to help her. The victim was taken to the civil hospital, where she was declared dead.

Baljinder Kaur's brother, Dharampreet Singh, stated that his sister had boarded a bus from their village on Saturday as usual, but at about 9.30 am, he received a call from her boss alerting him of the incident. "We immediately rushed to Mohali and reached the civil hospital, but by that time it was all over. The doctors on duty informed us that she (Baljinder Kaur) is no more,”  Dharampreet Singh stated.

According to law enforcement, the accused appears to be a jilted lover seeking vengeance after she declined his marriage proposal. In an interview with The Indian Express, DSP (city-1) Mohit Aggarwal stated, "The accused had known the victim for over three years and had proposed to her for marriage, but she declined. "He (Sukchain Singh) had been putting pressure on her for the past three months over the issue."

The injured police officers were sent to the hospital. "One of the three injured police personnel, Sarbjeet Singh, suffered a deep cut on his body when the accused attacked the police team with the sword," said DSP Aggarwal.

According to police sources, Sukchain Singh intended to marry Baljinder Kaur, and the couple planned to marry in January of this year. But later, Baljinder Kaur wanted to postpone the wedding because she wanted her brother to relocate to Italy.

"Her (Baljinder Kaur) brother travelled to Italy around six months ago. She supported him financially. Her mother is bedridden. Baljinder provided financial support for her family, according to a police official.

It was also discovered during the investigation that Baljinder Kaur and Sukchain Singh had severe disagreements about their marriage about a year ago, but the matter was handled at the panchayat level. Sukchain Singh vowed not to speak with her at the time, but they both reconnected about eight months later.

While Sukchain Singh's family claimed that they knew Baljinder Kaur because she had visited his home twice, Baljinder Kaur's brother (Dharampreet Singh) stated that they were unaware of Sukchain Singh or his family.

Similar Incidents

However, this is not the first case in which a woman refused a man's advances and was killed by the man who claimed to love her. Authorities in Chennai confirmed that a 25-year-old software engineer died at the hands of a transgender friend. Nandhini was brutally murdered on the eve of her birthday by the accused, 26-year-old Vetrimaran, in Thalambur, near Kelambakkam. Vetrimaran, formerly known as Pandi Maheshwari, had sex reassignment surgery after earning an MBA. Nandhini and Vetrimaran had a strong bond from their school days in Madurai, and their friendship lasted even after Vetrimaran's gender change.

After finishing college, Nandhini began working for a software company in Chennai. She was staying with her uncle. Throughout the period, Vetrimaran developed feelings for Nandhini, which she rejected.  According to police investigations, Nandhini met Vetrimaran for a few hours on December 23, 2023, the day before her birthday. During that period, he reportedly purchased her new clothes, drove her to an orphanage near Tambaram, and made a donation, as reported by Outlook.

He then volunteered to drop Nandhini home. Vetrimaran asked for a couple of pictures on the way home, which she agreed to. He joked about binding her legs and hands, assuring her that it was 'only for fun'. Vetrimaran sliced her neck with a sharp object before burning her alive. As she yelled for help, he fled. Passersby heard her screams and rescued her, taking her to the government hospital in Chromepet. However, she succumbed to her injuries.

In a separate incident reported from Hubballi, Karnataka, a 20-year-old woman named Anjali Ambigera met a similar fate after allegedly rejecting the romantic advances of 23-year-old Girish Sawant. Anjali was fatally stabbed while asleep in her room. Anjali's sister, Yashodha, disclosed that Girish had harassed her sister after she declined his advances.

The victim's sister claimed that the killer threatened Anjali with the same fate as Neha Hiremath, who was stabbed to death by a former classmate, sparking widespread outrage. "Girish had been harassing my sister Anjali for some time now. He expressed his love to her but my sister declined. He even pressured my sister to go with him to Mysuru. He had also threatened her that she would meet the same fate as that of Neha Hiremath," Yashodha told news agency PTI. Yashodha expressed anger with the authorities' lack of action in response to their previous concerns about Girish's threats. Tragically, her fears proved true when her sister became another victim of unrequited love turned deadly.
