In this election season, PM Narendra Modi is going to many locations in Uttar Pradesh to campaign for the BJP. During his visit to Lakhimpur Khera earlier this week, Modi snapped at the current chief minister of UP, Akhilesh Yadav, saying women are not safe anywhere in the state.
“There's no area in Uttar Pradesh where women are safe even during the day, they are not able to leave their home without fear. Those who are jailed run gangs outside and people are being killed on their directions," said Modi, as reported by Times Now.
He spoke to the crowd about how women are scared to go out wearing gold chains in fear of being targeted by chain snatchers. “This is no great work your party has done,” he accused Yadav of not maintaining law and order in the state and how it affects women.
Women in UP do feel scared to move out in the public spaces, even in broad daylight and the kind of crimes happening against them that have been reported across the country are a shame to the state. While rape videos are on sale for as low as Rs 50 in Agra, girls’ phone numbers are sold by mobile recharge shops to gain a few extra bucks.
Modi further criticised Yadav for not inviting anyone from the Centre during the inauguration of the Lucknow-Agra Expressway. He said, “Centre also gave the money for construction of the Lucknow-Agra expressway, but no one was invited from the Centre as the CM wanted to tell people that he has worked for Uttar Pradesh."
He also claimed that all the dues of sugarcane farmers will be paid as early as possible as soon as the BJP comes to power as the party’s manifesto has promised.
Polling for the UP assembly are being held today.
