Miss Jharkhand Landfill Video: A video showing Model Surbhi walking on a landfill is going viral on social media. The Miss Jharkhand 2020 can be seen wearing a short red-coloured skirt and flat slippers and walking past a heap of garbage junk in Ranchi to draw the attention of the authorities towards an important cause. She has collaborated with award-winning photographer Pranjal Kumar who wanted to lay emphasis on the garbage crisis of India.
The photographer, in his Instagram post, said that we generate around 62 million tonnes of garbage annually. Out of this, 75% is left untreated. To throw light on the enormity of the problem, he said that if the trucks of untreated garbage would be laid end to end, they would cover half the distance between the earth and the moon. Moreover, 31 million tonnes of waste is being sent directly to our landfills every year leading to their overflowing. Here's the Instagram post.
His photos have received a lot of praise on social media. One user wrote "Kudos for bringing this critical issue up by your photographs".
The project was shot with a drone camera at a height of 210 feet. Surbhi caught a skin infection at the landfill and had to go to the doctor for the same. However, their efforts have not gone in vain as Ranchi Municipal Corporation Commissioner Mukesh Kumar has chalked out a plan to set up a recycling plant in Jhiri. The authorities are planning to produce electricity and plastic items from the waste.
He also said that he sent the same entry for the Environmental Photographer of the Year and hopes to win at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in November where winners will be announced.
