On Tuesday (March 27), a 17-year-old girl was ruthlessly set on fire by her jilted lover in Hyderabad. The reason behind this criminal act is said to be the girl’s decision to marry someone else. The girl, who suffered 70 per cent burns, is struggling for life at Osmania Hospital.
The trigger
The accused, a minor, works as a vegetable seller. The incident took place around 2 pm when the girl was alone in her house in Ganga Nagar.
According to a TOI report, the boy wanted the contact details of the girl’s fiance. This led to an argument between the two as the girl refused to share details
When he kept on insisting, the girl locked her phone inside a cupboard.

Amberpet inspector AP Anand Kumar told TOI: "The annoyed boy picked up a kerosene bottle and doused her with it. He then gagged her and started searching for a matchbox.”
At that time, the stove was on. When the accused didn’t find a matchbox, he took the victim’s dupatta to the stove, lit it and without a thought, threw it on the girl. He also suffered some burns on his hands. The victim’s neighbours rushed to save the girl upon hearing her screams. When the boy was asked about the girl, he lied that the girl was trying to immolate herself and he got injured while trying to save her. The two were taken to Osmania Hospital.
Victim's statement
Later, when the victim was interrogated, she managed to give her statement. The initial investigation revealed that the boy wanted to marry the girl but her marriage had already been fixed with another man. She had got engaged and the girl’s parents were waiting for her to turn 18 to get her married.

The inspector said both, the girl and boy, were dropouts and were not pursuing their education. They knew each other since they were classmates at one point in time. A case has been registered under Section 307 (Attempt to murder) of the IPC.
