Milkha Singh wife admitted to hospital due to COVID-19 pneumonia: 91-year-old sprinter Milkha Singh's wife Nirmal Kaur, a former national volleyball team captain, tested COVID-19 positive on Wednesday. She was then admitted to the same hospital where his husband is undergoing treatment. Both Singh and Kaur have been taken to the Fortis Hospital in Mohali with symptoms of COVID pneumonia.
Veteran Olympian Milkha Singh, also known as flying Sikh, is on oxygen support. Since his condition is stable, on Wednesday, the sprinter was shifted out of the Intensive Care Unit ward. Despite being "weak" Singh is showing clinical signs of improvement. However, his 82-year-old wife is being closely monitored, the hospital said in a statement. They are sharing the same room.
Last week, the couple and their son Jeev Milkha Singh’s wife Kudrat and grandson Harjai had taken an RT-PCR Test. Kaur's results had returned negative, while all the other members of Singh's family tested positive. The runner was admitted to the ICU on May 24, after being diagnosed with "COVID pneumonia" on the same day of his admission and since then his food intake has been quite low. The legendary athlete is suspected to have contracted the infection on May 20 from the house helps who had tested positive for the virus as well, NDTV reported.
Meanwhile, his daughter Mona Milkha Singh, who had been attending to COVID-19 patients in New York as an Emergency Room doctor, arrived in Chandigarh on Wednesday and her brother, ace golfer Jeev also returned from Dubai on Saturday.
Jeev Milkha Singh offered an update on the condition of his parents. “Mom and dad are on oxygen. They will pull through,” he said.
Both are doing fine and maintaining good saturation levels, a source said adding that Singh has not taken any food for two days now but he wanted to take a walk. However, the person also noted that he is under strict observation while Kaur is also responding well to the treatment.
Just wanted to thank everyone for the outpouring of good wishes that have poured in for my dad. He is in great spirits and receiving wonderful care and I am sure he will be the Flying Sikh he has always been very soon.

Singh is a four-time Asian Games gold-medallist and 1958 Commonwealth Games champion but the world will remember his greatest performance at the 1960 Rome Olympics when he finished fourth in the 400m final. His timing in the final remained the national record for 38 years. He also represented India in the 1956 and 1964 Olympics and was bestowed the Padma Shri in 1959. Kaur, meanwhile, is known to be a dedicated administrator, who worked for the welfare of sportspersons.
