Former First Lady Michelle Obama and outgoing president Donald Trump are the most admired woman and man of 2020 in the US, according to a poll by Gallup. Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris ranks second on the list of women, while former US president Barack Obama ranks second in the men's list. Michelle Obama has come on top of this list for the third year in a row, while Trump has taken the first position from her husband, who was the most admired man in the US for 12 years consecutively.

According to Gallup, Obama was named the most admired woman by ten percent of voters, while Harris and outgoing First Lady Melania Trump came in second and third, with six percent and four percent votes respectively. Other women to feature among top ten of the Most Admired Women in the US list for 2020 are Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Angela Merkel, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Queen Elizabeth II and Greta Thunberg.

"The incumbent president is usually top of mind when Gallup asks Americans to name, without prompting, which man living anywhere in the world they admire most," says the poll report.  Which is why it is not a surprise that close to 18 percent of voters named Trump, while 15 percent named Obama and six and three percent named President-elect Joe Biden and US infectious disease expert Dr Anthony Fauci respectively. Other prominent names to have ranked are Dalai Lama, Bernie Sanders, Elon Musk and Bill Gates.

On December 23, Obama shared an Instagram post reflecting on the lasting impact of the Black Lives Matter movement, and the importance of embracing kindness and humanity at an individual as well as societal level. "I hope more people can find it in their hearts to meet these cries for decency not with mistrust, but with love and a willingness to listen. Because as the COVID-19 crisis has made clear, our fates are inextricably bound," she wrote.
