Anneka Patel, who worked as the Communications Manager at Facebook, shared when she received the mail about the mass lay-off at her company. She took to LinkedIn to talk about how it felt and what lies ahead of her.
Anneka Patel is an Indian-origin woman based in the United States who was working as a Communications Manager with the social media giant and is currently on maternity leave.
Meta Employee On Maternity Leave Fired
Patel said in her post that it was the middle of the night when she first woke up for her baby, that she checked the mail to find that her manager was fired. She wrote, "I woke up at 3am to pump for my three month old baby girl, Emilia. I checked my work email as I was anticipating the email from Mark Zuckerberg about the layoffs and there it was, but there were no details about which teams or who was impacted. Emilia woke up at 4am so I nursed her and at 4:30am I got a text from my manager that she had been laid off. I put Emilia back down to sleep at 4:45am and sat there wondering what to do next."
Patel talked about speaking to her coworkers about it and she was quite anxious, she said, "One of my coworkers said the automated emails were being sent out from then until 7am so I was in two minds of whether to go back to sleep, or stay up. Then at 5:35am I got the email that I had been included in the layoffs. My heart sank."
Patel further talked about working at Meta was her dream for the longest time and that she had a great time working for the platform. She also shares her beautiful experience, and the times she told others that in spite of the bad press the company receives, she had a lot of good stories to share from her two and a half years of working at the company.
Patel further answered the pertinent question for any employee in such a state of affairs, she wrote, "So, what’s next? That’s a tough one to answer. My maternity leave is due to end in February and while these first few months of motherhood have been some of the most challenging of my life, I wouldn’t have traded them for the world. I’m going to continue to dedicate my time to my daughter over the next few months, and will be #opentowork in the New Year. While that’s a difficult decision to make knowing that it’s a competitive market out there with all the other tech layoffs, I know I’ll never get this time back with her."
She ended with a note about the lay-off saying, "Meta lost so many talented individuals today and I am thinking about everyone who was impacted."
Meta announced the decision to laying-off more than 11,000 employees at once yesterday. The communication included a blog by Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, apologising for the action. Zuckerberg said, "I want to take accountability for these decisions and how we got here. I know this is tough for everyone, and I’m especially sorry to those impacted." Twitter also laid off several employees a week back and in this new trend of tech lay-offs, people are worried about their job security in a down-faced economy.
