You must be living under a rock if you haven't come across the twitter trend Men Written By Women is going viral on social media. It aims to highlight the huge difference between the approach that male and female writers have while writing male characters in movies. According to the trend, male characters written by female writers are more caring, sensitive, considerate, feminists and far from the toxic idea of masculinity that boys in our society are raised with.
The various stills shared by netizens are from Bollywood films like Dear Zindagi that revolved around the story of a young girl reaching out to a male therapist Jug who helps her get rid of her fears and find the courage to accept herself. Other stills are from films like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Khoobsoorat, Lunch Box, October, Dil Dhadakne Do and many others which portrayed men as normal human beings who too have emotions, feelings and weaknesses.

A user praised Abhay Deol's character from Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Another said that we need such male characters who are imperfectly perfect.
Abhay deol’s character in ZNMD is so perfect 😭💜 https://t.co/cGFjEjB540

A perfectly normal human being with empathy, imperfectly perfect ❤️ https://t.co/mJ5NmTeCGU
This was soon followed by a lot of netizens sharing pictures of male characters which are written by male writers. References were made to movies like Kabir Singh, Dabangg which show male protagonists as alpha heroes who are violent, unforgiving and refuse to take no for an answer.

A lot of netizens expressed their desire to see more male characters written by women. Few also pointed out that male writers do not portray their female characters realistically. Most of them show them as manic pixie dream girls who only exist to help men come out of their misery and make their lives better. Such portrayals were called "boring" and "too good to be true" in real life.
and sometimes when men write women they look at them with rose colored glasses and make them manic pixie dream girls whose only purpose in the movie is to get the cribbing men out of their misery. those portrayals of women are almost too good to be true and frankly boring. https://t.co/F9QoNTZxjX
