People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti supports Mamata Banerjee and her pitch that the opposition parties need to unite.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti were reacting to a letter by Mamata Banerjee addressed to the non-Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leaders. In the letter, Banerjee pitched for opposition unity against the alleged “assaults” by BJP and its government on democracy and the constitutional federalism of the country. Banerjee also stated that the opposition parties need to put up a united front against the “onslaught”. Mehbooba Mufti supports Banerjee and her pitch, which she displayed by tweeting her support.
Mufti showed her solidarity with the West Bengal Chief Minister in a Tweet.
Agree with @MamataOfficial di that in order to protect our democracy & its cherished values it is imperative for the opposition parties to unite. @derekobrienmp @AITCofficial https://t.co/7NjJtNSPeu pic.twitter.com/hmEq6ZqPln

Mufti also shared a copy of the letter she wrote in response to Banerjee and addressed it to politicians such as Sonia Gandhi from Congress, Sharad Pawar from NCP, MK Stalin from DMK, and Uddhav Thackeray from Shiv Sena.
In her response, Mufti stated that “I share and understand your apprehensions about the central government undermining the federal framework that has been guaranteed by the Indian Constitution.”
Mufti alleged that the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2021 is an example of BJP using its “brute majority” to pass and implement bills. She stated their process of “bulldozing” opponents began in 2019 with the stripping of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. Mufti added that “the need of the hour is to unite and put up a collective fight”.
When speaking about the dismemberment of Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti stated that “Unfortunately, not many in the opposition used their collective power and voice to oppose this unilateral and illegal step.”
Banerjee’s letter was released by TMC on March 31 ahead of the second phase of polls in West Bengal. The letter attempts to gather support from opposition leaders by highlighting how non-BLJ states have allegedly suffered due to the BJP-led Centre’s actions.
The eight-phase election in West Bengal will end on April 29 and votes will be counted on May 2.
