Meghan Markle and Prince Harry: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed to the Queen that they are not going to return as working royals.
Buckingham Palace released an official statement to confirm the same. As the news was long speculated, the royal palace's take on it makes the departure of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry official.
Here's what we know of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's departure:
- Meghan Markle and Harry had left the UK and had moved to Canada last year. The exact reason for this huge step hasn't yet been revealed by the couple but media reports have hinted at Meghan Markle not being comfortable in the royal family.
- There have also been many privacy lawsuits filed by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry against British tabloids for clicking their private pictures and publishing a personal letter from Meghan Markle to her father Thomas Markle.
- Buckingham Palace in its statement on Friday said that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have handed over their military responsibilities to the Queen.
- The said roles will be other working royals in the family along with the charities and other organisations under the Duke and Duchess.
- The decision was made almost a year after the couple left London. The royal family statement said that the hand-over of duties was under a 12-month review.
- Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were together responsible for the Royal Marines, RAF Honington, Royal Navy Small Ships and Diving, Commonwealth Trust, Rugby Football Union, Rugby Football league, The Association of Commonwealth Universities and the Royal National Theatre. All of these have been now handed over to the Queen of England until a new appointment is made.
