This money translates to roughly 3.20 crore rupees. She sold the original photo as a non-fungible token (NFT) after she and her father Dave Roth consulted a few meme celebrities. As a result of this, Zoe Roth will get 10 per cent of the sum every time the image is re-sold. For over a decade, she and her family had no agency on the meme which had her face on it.
Here's what we know about Zoe Roth, the girl from the Disaster Girl meme:
- Zoe Roth was born on February 25, 2000, in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. She is currently 21 years old.
- She is a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill studying peace, war and defence. After graduating, she has planned to take a gap year before pursuing a degree in International Relations.
- She became an instant meme-favourite when a photo of hers started getting circulated on social media.
- In the photo, she could be seen flashing a devilish smile at the camera, while firefighters try to put out a house fire in the background.
- The picture was taken by her father while she was roaming around her neighbourhood in North Carolina. She was four years old at that time.
- The picture then went viral in no time and has been shared about a million times in the last decade. That's how she became popular as the 'Disaster Girl', and became a favourite among meme-makers.
- Soon after, the Roth family decided to take control of the Disaster Girl meme. They listed the "Disaster Girl" token on April 16 for a 24-hour auction. The price for it reached up to 180 Ether which is a cryptocurrency worth up to $430,000. It's worth then shot up to $470,000.
- The auction was then subsequently won by a bidder called 3FMusic who gave 180 Ether for the image.
- By selling the image as an NFT, Zoe Roth retains the copyright for it.
- Zoe now plans to donate the money (which is in cryptocurrency form) to charities, and also use it to clear her student loans.
