Justice Manjula Chellur, 60, took oath as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on Monday morning. With this, she has now become the second woman to be appointed as the Chief Justice of Bombay HC after Justice Sujata Manohar, who was the Chief Justice in 1994. Chellur’s oath swearing-in ceremony was administrated by Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao at Raj Bhavan.

Born on December 5, 1955, Justice Chellur started her career as an advocate in Bellary, and was also the first woman to practise as advocate there. Appointed the district judge in 1988, she went to Warwick University, London, in 1997 for a fellowship on Gender and Law and became the first woman Chief Justice of the Karnataka high court in September 2011.
A special mention must be made of the fact that Justice Chellur was the president of the Karnataka Judicial Academy from 2008 to 2010, and in the capacity of Executive Chairperson of the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority, she devoted her attention to working for the welfare of transgender men and women by arranging awareness seminars throughout the state.

In August 2014, she was sworn in charge of the Calcutta High Court as its first woman Chief Justice. Subsequently, after serving there thus far, Justice Chellur will take charge of the Bombay High Court later in August 2016, and will serve until her retirement date which is 4th December 2017.
