Indian-American Vanita Gupta has been nominated by President-elect Joe Biden on Thursday to be the next associate attorney general. He has also nominated Judge Merrick Garland for the position of the attorney general. The Biden-Kalama Harris team is now the formally certified winner of the 3 November 2020 election.
Seventy-eight-year-old Biden also announced the nominations of Lisa Monaco as deputy attorney general and Kristen Clarke as assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division, PTI reported. "Our first-rate nominees to lead the Justice Department are eminently qualified, embody character and judgment that is beyond reproach, and have devoted their careers to serving the American people with honor and integrity,” Biden said.

Forty-six-year-old Gupta, who is the first woman to helm the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, if confirmed by the US Senate, would be the highest-ranking Indian-American in the department of justice. She will also be the first woman of colour to serve in this role.
Expressing gratitude, she took to Twitter and wrote, "I am honored to return to a Justice Department that will push every day for justice, accountability, and equality under the law. It will not be enough to simply restore what has been undermined or lost. This moment demands bold leadership, and that is what we will bring."

A former acting assistant attorney general and a respected civil rights attorney in America, Gupta further added, "I look forward to again working alongside the exceptional women and men at the Justice Department who every day defend the Constitution, enforce our federal laws, and seek to create a more perfect union with deep integrity and without political interference."

This announcement came amidst violent protests and rioting at the US Capitol Hill. A war veteran named Ashli Babbitt was reportedly shot dead by Capitol Police. The US was veteran with 14 years of experience was declared dead when taken to a local hospital for treatment. You can read about it here.
