Meet Country's First Woman IPS Officer To Lead A CM's Security

Subashini Sankaran is the first woman IPS officer to be put in charge of a chief minister’s security. according to News18. In July this year, she took charge of the security of the Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal.

“It was a new thing for everybody but people slowly adapted to being comfortable about having a lady police officer as the chief minister’s head of security,” she told a correspondent at News18.

Sankaran worked in different parts of Assam before working with the Chief Minister. She started out at the Azara Police Station in Guwahati, followed by a posting in Biswanath, Silchar and Tezpur. Sankaran says that these opportunities gave her people-management skills.

None of her family members are IPS officers. Sankaran is originally from the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu and moved to Mumbai in the early 1980s to study sociology at St. Xavier’s. Subsequently, she completed her M.Phil from Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi, where she studied women and terrorism. After qualifying to become an IPS officer, she trained at the Sardar Vallabhai Police Academy in Hyderabad.

Sankaran shows an inspiring level of dedication to her job. She often does night shifts and says working 15-18 hours at a stretch is normal for her. She has even learnt Assamese in order to become better at her job. She says that people aren't used to seeing women IPS officers, and often assume that she is a lawyer when they see her in the Chief Minister's entourage!
