Olympic bronze medallist and five-time world champion MC Mary Kom has advanced to the final of the Asian Women’s Boxing Championships in Ho Chi Minh City. With this win on Tuesday (Nov 7), Mary Kom is eyeing her fifth gold medal at the Asian Boxing Championships.

The 34-year-old Rajya Sabha MP once again showed what it is to be the best in the ring. She defeated Japan’s Tsubasa Komura in the light-flyweight (45-48 kg) category.

Both the boxers attacked each other from the very beginning of the bout.
Kom kept her defence mechanism tight against a slightly more aggressive Tsubasa till the second round. In the third round, however, Kom engaged in powerful punching. The experienced boxer successfully landed a series on blows on Tsubasa.

“Magnificent Mary” has returned to her preferred weight category after five years of competing in 51-kg category. The 51-kg category was included as an Olympic category just before the 2012 Games.
If Kom manages to keep up the spirit and wins the final, this will be her first Asian gold in the 48-kg category
The legendary Indian boxer will next face off the winner of the bout between Jargalan Ochirbat of Mongolia and Kim Hyang Mi of DPR Korea in the final.
Mary Kom, who has four gold medals to her name in this competition in the past, was recently named ambassador of the AIBA Women's Youth World Championships. The AIBA tournament will be held in Guwahati from November 19 to 26.

"It is an honour to have been chosen as Ambassador for the 2017 Women's Youth World Championships and be a part of the prestigious competition which is being held in India for the first time," the 34-year-old Manipuri was quoted as saying by the International Boxing Association (AIBA), TOI reported.
