Major Anuj Sood, who was killed in an anti-terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Handwara last year was posthumously given the gallantry award, Shaurya Chakra, by the President of India Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday. His wife Aakriti Sood received honour on her husband's behalf.
In May, 2020, pictures of Aakriti Sood mourning her husband had drawn many emotional responses on social media. She was seen throwing her arms around Sood's coffin as it was being kept in the Army vehicle decorated with flowers. The soldier's body was sent from his family home in Panchkula to the Mani Majra cremation ground in Chandigarh. His sister Harshita, who is also an army officer, was also present there supporting Aakriti.

Major Anuj Sood was 30-years-old at the time of death. He was among five security personnel who were killed in a firefight with terrorists in north Kashmir's Handwara last year, as per reports. Sood's father is a retired Army official, Brigadier Chandrakant Sood. Speaking to the media, he had said that he is proud of his son's sacrifice.
He said, "He was a true son of the nation," he said at his Panchkula home. Major Anuj Sood was part of the Brigade of the Guards regiment. It now comes under the 21 Rashtriya Rifles. He had joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) in 2008. His family had shared that Sood only had one dream-- to join the army. If not for his death, the soldier was to return home after six months. He had been posted in Jammu and Kashmir for two years and was about to join the 12 Guards unit in Gurdaspur.
The President of India awarded the gallantry award to many other soldiers. Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal was also given the award posthumously. His wife, who is also an Army officer now, Lieutenant Nitika Kaul received the award.
