At 7 feet 3 inches, Maria stood not only as one of the tallest women in the world but also as a symbol of  pride, and inspiration for generations to come. 

From Amparo do Sao Francisco to International Fame

Maria's journey to fame commenced in her humble hometown of Amparo do Sao Francisco, where she underwent a period of astonishing growth during her late teens. Transforming from a normal 10-year-old into Brazil's tallest woman, Maria's towering height of 7 feet 3.8 inches captured the imagination of a nation. Her remarkable stature led her to win the prestigious 'Queen of Height' contest in the 1960s, propelling her into the spotlight and solidifying her status as an icon. 

Throughout her life, Maria became a symbol of pride  for the people of Sergipe. She captured the hearts of many in her homeland and beyond, becoming a national celebrity and earning the title of "Rainha da Altura" (Queen of Height) on a popular Brazilian TV program at the age of 18. Her charisma and presence made her an attraction during her late teens, as she toured cities and performed in circuses.Her towering height made her a household name, and she was honored with statues and even had a skyscraper named after her. The Maria Feliciana building in Aracaju stands as a tribute to her legacy, while a statue unveiled in May 2022 at the Museu de Gente Sergipana further immortalizes her contributions. Despite facing health challenges later in life, Maria remained a beloved figure in her community, symbolizing the spirit of Sergipanos.

Beyond her public persona, Maria was also a devoted mother and wife. She raised three children with her husband, Assuires Jose dos Santos, embodying love, compassion, and familial devotion.

News of Maria's passing has saddened the nation, prompting an outpouring of grief from across Brazil. Politicians, officials, and admirers have paid tribute to her remarkable life and achievements. The mayor of Aracaju declared three days of mourning, while Senator Laércio Oliveira praised her as a  symbol of Sergipe's perseverance.

"I received the news of that Maria Feliciana had passed away with sadness. One of the tallest women in the world. I remember the first time I saw her when I was still a child. It was in Pao de Acucar where I was born. Her presence caused quite a star. My condolences to her family, friends and admirers. May God comfort their hearts,” Mayor Edvaldo Nogueira said in a statement.
