Australian actress Margot Robbie will soon be seen on the silver screen as a pirate. One of the most popular actresses in Hollywood, Margot will star in a new version of one of Disney’s biggest film franchises, the Pirates of the Caribbean, leading a girl gang.

The two-time Oscar nominee will be a protagonist in a female-centric “Pirates” movie, a source from EW said on Friday. According to reports, Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson will be writing the script. The film is not a spin-off of the original Pirates of the Caribbean series. It will be a new story with female characters in lead roles.

Talking about working in films that are women-centric, the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actress told the PA, "I think we naturally gravitate towards female-driven content because a) there's a lack of it and we feel a responsibility to kind of attack the statistics in the industry but b) that's really where our interest lies and there's a gap in the market..."

The original franchise that had Johnny Depp at its center was a huge hit in box-office, making a total of $4.5 billion.  The future plans for the series is on temporary hold since Depp has become a controversial figure after the abuse allegations from ex-wife Amber Heard. The actor claimed innocence and insisted he “was the victim" of abuse by Heard.

Margot Robbie leading girl gangs

Known for her portrayal of the popular comic book character Harley Quinn, Robbie has several awards under her belt. She rose to fame from Martin Scorsese's critically-acclaimed film The Wolf of Wall Street.

She was hugely praised for her performance in the film I, Tonya for which she also got an Oscar nomination. Margot stole hearts as Tonya Harding; a figure skater-turned-felon. She played an important role in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time ... In Hollywood in 2019.

Robbie stole the limelight in the star-studded film The Suicide Squad and reprised her role as the infamous Harley Quinn, leader of a girl gang, in 2020 for the movie Birds of Prey.

Talking about the actress’s admiration for women protagonists in films, screenwriter Hodson spoke of her vision for Birds and Prey when she said that Margot really wanted to see "Harley with girlfriends, Harley in a girl gang. Harley is such a naturally sociable character. And I think there was just a general longing to see girls together on-screen — women being friends.”
