The Uber Cab Rape case has put the poor transport safety measures in the spotlight. Up until now, cabs were seen as relatively the safest mode of transport for women after dark. However, the incident that took place this Saturday, has bought this to question. Most women are questioning the government, since they now have no safe way of commuting in the NCR region after dark.
In an effort to address this issue, Union Women and Child Development Minister, Maneka Gandhi has mooted the idea of employing a section of women driven cabs, exclusively for women. She added that the government is planning to set up dedicated cells in every district for providing security to women.
According to a report by India TV News; at BJP rally in Rithala, Delhi, she announced, "We have decided to form women cells comprising a doctor, nurse, lawyer, psychologist and a lady police officer in every district. The cell will help women overcome their fear of authority. The cell comprises all those people a woman requires to fight the law and get justice."
The Union Minister called the increasing cases of rape a “culture problem.” She also urged companies to look after the welfare of their employees before turning to the government. She said, “One of the ways
She also said that if the judicial system worked in a more efficient manner, it would instill fear in the minds of the culprits. “If the judicial system would just work better and faster people would be more scared but it takes such a long time then a lot of people lose their fear of committing crime,” she added.
