Benjamin Mendy who was a part of France's World Cup-winning side in 2018, has been remanded in custody until his hearing at Chester Magistrates' Court on Friday. In 2017, the left-back joined City from Monaco for a reported figure of £52 million (over 500 crore rupees).
After police stated that "Benjamin Mendy had been accused of four charges of rape and one charge of sexual assault", Manchester City suspended him on Thursday.
The allegations against Mendy were made by three women one of whom is under the age of 18. The alleged incidents reportedly between October 2020 and August 2021. The matter was referred to Chester Crown Court by Judge Jack McGarva, and the footballer is scheduled to appear in court on September 10.
In order to avoid jeopardizing a fair trial, the public was advised by the people not to report, comment or post information online related to the case. He is accused of assaulting females, one of whom is under 18, at his house in Prestbury, Cheshire.
According to the City, Mendy has been suspended pending an inquiry. City's statement continued, "The situation is subject to a legal procedure, and the Club will be unable to make an additional comment until that process is completed."
Mendy, a member of France's World Cup-winning squad in 2018, has been remanded in jail before his Friday appearance at Chester Magistrates' Court. In the last four years, Mendy has played 75 matches for the City, earning three Premier League championships, but injuries and a lack of consistency have curtailed his playing time.
On a six-year deal, he has little over two years left. In November 2019, he received his tenth cap for France. On the opening weekend of the Premier League season, he played against Tottenham, but did not play against Norwich on Saturday.
