In a shocking incident, a man in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly bit his wife's nose over demand for dowry. The wife has been injured and has lodged an FIR against her husband and in-laws for dowry harassment. Read on to learn more about this case.
The wife, who goes by the name Ajmi, is 22 years old and a resident of Maheshpur. On December 15, the in-laws allegedly beat her up and the husband injured her by biting her nose. On Tuesday, December 19, Ajmi lodged an FIR at CB Ganj Police Station against her husband and six members of his family. Talking about the incident, Bareilly Additional Superintendent of Police, City, Rahul Bhati said that the woman has registered a complaint against her husband Nazim, father-in-law Sabir, family members Rihan, Rukhsar, Majid Hussain and Saeed Ahmed for dowry harassment and causing injuries to her.
Details about the case
As per the complaint, Nazim and his family often harassed Ajmi for dowry. Ajmi married Nazim one and a half years ago and birthed a child which is 5 months old now. However, since her marriage, her in-laws harassed her for bringing less dowry. Her husband, Nazim, would often beat her up and throw her out of the house. Each time, the Panchayat used to meddle and initiate adjustment.
Ajmi told Police that even after the nose-biting incident in which she has been injured, the family is adamant on their demand for dowry. A probe is underway to look into the case and provide proper justice.
This case comes days after a doctor in Kerala ended her life because her boyfriend's family demanded an exorbitant dowry. The family demanded 150 gold sovereigns, 15 acres of land, and a BMW car. The huge amount led to the cancellation of the wedding. In the suicide note, the doctor wrote, "Everyone wants money only.
Rate of domestic violence and dowry harassment in India
The recent NCRB report 2022 revealed that most of the crimes committed against women were registered under the 'Cruelty by husband or relatives' category. The report shows that 4,45,256 cases of crimes against women were reported last year, and 31.4 percent of these were committed by husbands or relatives. Moreover, despite the presence of the Dowry Prohibition Act, dowry harassment and deaths are a common reality in India. The aforementioned report said that 13,479 cases were registered under the Dowry Prohibition Act, with 6,450 reported dowry deaths.
