Tamil Nadu police arrested a man for assaulting a female police officer during a protest in Virudhunagar district. The incident took place in Aruppukottai, where demonstrators were blocking the road. A video captured the moment a protestor yanked the hair of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gayathri while she was working to disperse the crowd.

The video also shows DSP Gayathri being physically assaulted by another individual during the clash.

Following the incident, police detained 30-year-old Balamurugan, who was identified in the video pulling DSP Gayathri’s hair. Four additional individuals were also arrested in connection with the protest. DSP Gayathri was not injured during the confrontation, and other officers quickly moved her away from the scene.

In response to the incident, AIADMK leader and Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami criticised the DMK government. Palaniswami stated, "Under the DMK regime, lawlessness prevails, and anyone can be attacked without fear of consequences. I strongly condemn the DMK government and the puppet chief minister for creating an environment where even the police, who are meant to protect the public, are unsafe. Those involved in the assault on DSP Gayathri should face appropriate legal action."

The protestors were demanding the arrest of those responsible for the murder of Kalikumar, who was reportedly killed due to an old rivalry. On August 3, Kalikumar's family and villagers staged a demonstration outside the government hospital where his body was kept, calling for immediate action against the accused.

In a separate, unusual incident on August 21, a policeman struck the Patna Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) while the SDM was in the middle of the road trying to disperse protestors. The other officers quickly intervened, stopping the offending policeman and informing him of the SDM's identity. They then escorted the SDM away from the area.
