A 30-year-old man was arrested in Andhra Pradesh yesterday in connection with the rape and murder of a 75-year-old woman. The woman was found dead at a cattle shed on the outskirts of Kothapalli village of Chittoor district on January 5. Chittoor DSP N Sudhakar Reddy said that the police arrested the accused on Friday.
The accused has been booked after the postmortem reports confirmed that the woman was raped after being murdered, reported TOI. C Lakshminatha Reddy, the Chittoor west CI, headed the special teams probing the case and ensured the accused's arrest. The arrested man, identified as Sudhakar, has several other cases registered against him at the Tavanampalle police station.

DSP Reddy told reporters that the accused was highly intoxicated when he found the woman sleeping alone in the cattle shed. The woman did try to raise an alarm, but the man strangulated her to death. Later, he escaped from the spot after allegedly raping the dead woman and stealing her gold ornaments.
In the past few months, India witnessed a string of rape cases being reported from several parts of the country. A 50-year-old Anganwadi worker was reportedly gangraped and murdered in Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh earlier this week. The main accused in this case is a priest of the temple where the incident allegedly happened. The mahant (priest) was nabbed by the UP police of December 7, while two of his disciples were arrested a day before. Read about the case here.

In September last year, a 90-year-old woman was allegedly raped and assaulted by a plumber in Delhi’s Nazafgarh area. According to a statement issued by DCW the incident happened while the woman was waiting for her milkman in the evening, “the accused came and told her that her regular milk delivery man wasn’t available today and he will take her to the place where she could get milk. He took the lady to a farm instead and raped her.”
