A man in Saudi Arabia reportedly issued a triple talaq to his wife in Kanpur through a video call after she had her eyebrows groomed, something he strongly disapproved of. The victim Gulsaiba has registered the FIR and now wants the police to take appropriate action against her husband.
As reported by the Free Press Journal, the victim Gulsaiba, tied the knot with Salim in January 2022. The accused is presently working in Saudi Arabia. Allegedly, Gulsaiba's in-laws initiated harassment for dowry shortly after her husband departed for Saudi Arabia on August 30.
In her statement to the police, Gulsaiba said that her husband had conservative views and disapproved of her clothing preferences. On October 4, during a video call, he noticed that she had recently groomed her eyebrows.
He inquired about it, and despite her explanation that she had done so to look prettier, as she felt unkempt eyebrows didn't complement her face, he became upset.
Salim then threatened her and told her that she was from her marriage. He then pronounced talaq three times and disconnected the call, after which he did not answer further attempts at communication. Gulsaiba's complaint has led to registering an FIR against her husband, along with five other individuals, including her mother-in-law.
Gulsaiba now wants the police to take appropriate action against him.
Triple Talaq In India
Triple talaq, also known as talaq-e-bid'ah, is a controversial Islamic practice of instant divorce used by some Muslim men in India. It allows a husband to divorce his wife by uttering "talaq" (the Arabic word for divorce) three times, either in a single sitting or over some time, with or without the presence of his wife. This practice has been criticised for its potential misuse and its negative impact on women.
In 2019, the Indian Parliament passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, which criminalises the practice of instant triple talaq. Under this law, a Muslim man who pronounces triple talaq can be subjected to imprisonment for up to three years.
Before the legislation, in August 2017, the Indian Supreme Court, in a historic decision, declared the practice of instant triple talaq unconstitutional. The court ruled that it violated the fundamental rights of Muslim women.
