On March 30, Mali's government flew the 25-year-old pregnant woman to Morocco for better health care. She was initially believed to be carrying septuplets. However, she later gave birth to nonuplets, a phenomenon that is considered extremely rare.

The spokesperson of the Moroccan health ministry said in a statement that Cisse gave birth to five girls and four boys by Caesarean. Mali's Health Minister Fanta Siby told AFP that the mother and her babies are doing well, also adding that the doctor who accompanied Cisse was keeping her in the loop.

Siby further said that the new mom and her children are due to return in several weeks' time. The local press reports state that the doctors were concerned about Cisse's health and the chances of her babies' survival.

Malian woman bears nonuplets: a rare occurrence

According to the African state's health ministry, the ultrasound examinations which took place Mali and in Morocco had reported earlier that Cisse was carrying seven babies, which later turned out to be incorrect.

Bearing nonuplets is an extremely rare occurrence and such deliveries can cause medical complications for any expecting mother and her children. On June 13, 1971, Geraldine Brodrick bore nonuplets, two of whom were stillborn. The last of the surviving babies, named Richard, died six days after birth. Similarly, on March 26, 1999, a woman named Zurina Mat Saad also gave birth to nine children, five of whom were boys and four were girls. But sadly, none of them survived more than six hours.
