Maldives Hires Amal Clooney To Represent Rohingya At UN

The Maldives has hired the services of the prominent lawyer, Amal Clooney, to represent Myanmar's persecuted Rohingya Muslims at the United Nations court. The Maldivian government said on Wednesday that it would formally join African state of Gambia in challenging Myanmar's alleged military crackdown. The crackdown reportedly resulted in millions of Rohingya Muslims fleeing into the neighbouring country of Bangladesh, as per a report cited by NDTV.

ICJ’s Verdict on The Myanmar Rohingyas

UN's top court demanded the nation takes "provisional measures". Judge Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf, the court's leader said that ''the ICJ is of the opinion that the Rohingya in Myanmar remain extremely vulnerable.”

ICJ has ordered Myanmar to “take effective measures to prevent the destruction and ensure the preservation of evidence related” to its acts against the minority.

As per reports, the African state of Gambia is acting on behalf of the 57-nation Organisation of Islamic Corporation asked the court to halt the "ongoing genocidal actions".

 Clooney’s Work Experience

Amal Clooney is a barrister who specializes in the fields of public international law, international criminal law, and human rights. She has represented clients in the International Criminal Court, the International Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights. She is ranked as one of the top lawyers in the UK in the cases of international human rights and international criminal law. She is married to the Hollywood actor George Clooney.

Prior, Amal served as a senior advisor to Kofi Annan when he was the UN’s representative on Syria. She was recently appointed to the UK Attorney General’s expert panel to represent cases involving public international law. Amal additionally also worked as the Counsel to the UN inquiry committee on the use of armed drones led by the Special Rapporteur on Counter-Terrorism and Human Rights.

Before joining the London Bar, she worked in The Hague with various UN justice mechanisms consisting of the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.
