Popular Malayalam film and television actor Saranya Sasi passed away following a nine-year battle with cancer, reports said Monday. She was 33 years old. Her young demise has left industry colleagues and fans in shock as tributes pour in for her on social media.
Last month, Sasi had contracted COVID-19 with resultant pneumonia and other complications, owing to which she was hospitalised. Earlier in the year, she had surgery as well, one of many in the treatment for the brain tumour she had been battling since 2012, reports from Manorama say.
She died at a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

A famous face on Malayalam screens, Saranya Sasi's most noted works on television included Harichandanam and Seetha, while in films were Chotta Mumbai, Thalappavu and Bombay. During the coronavirus pandemic, the 33-year-old had begun her own YouTube channel as well.
According to various reports, Sasi was struggling financially during her final months and had received monetary help from industry friends and colleagues. Actor Seema Nair reportedly even helped Sasi out with the construction of a new house.

Sharing photos of Sasi on Instagram, several of her co-actors and other Malayalam stars are posting their condolences. Actor Naveen Arakkal wrote, "May her soul Rest in peace." Souparnika Subhash said, "Very shocking and sad news....Rest in peace my dear." Guinnespakru wrote, "Farewell to dear Saranya."
