Malawian woman smuggling heroin worth Rs 28 crore was arrested by customs officials at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Thursday.
The Malawian woman smuggling heroin arrived at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on April 6 from Johannesburg via Doha. The accused was intercepted by the customs officials after her arrival.
The official statement released on April 8 stated that “on examination of her checked-in baggage and another handbag kept in the said baggage, four packets of white colour powder/granules totally weighing 4 kgs, suspected to be narcotics, were recovered.”
According to a statement issued by Shaukat Ali Nurvi, Joint Commissioner of Customs at the airport, the recovered material was subjected to testing. At first sight, the material appeared to contain a commercial quantity of heroin. The statement revealed that the estimated market value of the seized material is Rs 28 crore.
The accused woman who has been arrested is a resident of Malawi.
On July 5, 2020, the customs department at the Thiruvananthapuram airport seized 30 kilograms of gold from diplomatic baggage. The gold was worth more than 14 crore rupees. Swapna Suresh was a key accused in the Kerala gold smuggling case. Suresh had claimed that she was a personal acquaintance of the Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. She had claimed that she was an acquaintance in an official capacity as the representative of the UAE Consular General.
“I am also known to CM Pinarayi Vijayan from the time I was secretary to the Consul General. I believe I am trustworthy and reliable,” said Suresh.
According to Times Now, Suresh admitted that she along with others smuggled gold approximately 19 times since November 2019. Investigations also revealed that Suresh is also connected to high-profile officials also allegedly involved in the gold scam. She later named CM Vijayan and alleged that he was involved in the gold scam. Suresh reportedly claimed that the Chief Minister and ministers got crores as commission in the deal.
