Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Mahua Moitra gets rape threat following a tweet she made expressing support with comedian Vir Das, who is currently under heavy fire for a stage performance he recently delivered. A Twitter account, reacting to Mahua's remarks, said they wished she was "gang raped during post-poll rapes" in West Bengal this year.
Das' monologue I Come From Two Indias, presented for an audience at the Kennedy Centre in the United States and a video for which premiered online on November 15, has polarised social media owing to its issue-based content around gender, politics, sexuality and communalism. More on that here.
"I come from an India where we worship women during the day and gang-rape them during the night" and "I come from an India where we bleed blue every time we play green. But every time we lose to green, we turn orange all of a sudden" are some of the many lines from his show that are drawing outrage.
Many, including politicians, have meanwhile come out to laud Das for his topical speech. Among those who praised him was Moitra, who tweeted, "Thank you to @thevirdas for speaking truth about Two Indias Reactions also from 2 Indias- one having a laugh & other filing complaints with police!"
The account, which made a gangrape threat following Moitra's tweet, did so while responding to a retweet from another netizen. Belonging to one Uday Barad, who identifies themself as a "Consultant, Author, Freelance Journalist, and Commentator on current political affairs," the account location is shown to be in Goa.
Many are calling for action against Barad, pointing their tweet to Goa police.
The Bengal post-poll rape in the tweet in question refers to the multiple cases of alleged sexual violence and murders that were reported from the state in the aftermath of a heated election season that saw TMC's Mamata Banerjee return to her Chief Minister's seat. More here.
