During the announcement of Class 12 results, highlighting the religious identity of the topper has led to the backlash towards the president of West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE), Mahua Das. Reportedly, the political leaders claim that the step was taken to appease Trinamool Congress.
A senior council official said that Mahua Das intended the fact that the topper who belongs to a minority community has "fought social and economic hurdles".
The WBCHSE head announced on Thursday that a Muslim girl, without mentioning her name Rumana Sultan, from Murshidabad district scored 499 out of 500.
BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya, following the announcement, took to Twitter and wrote, "In Mamata Banerjee's Bengal, appeasement politics hits a new low, when a board official reduced academic achievement of a class 12th girl student to her religious identity....she repeatedly mentioned that the girl is a Muslim. One wonders what more these students have to endure."

Who is the WBCHSE head Mahua Das?
Professor Mahua Das was appointed as the new president of WBCHSE in 2013 within a day of the Higher Secondary Council chief’s resignation. Das, who was the principal of Women’s College, Bagbazar, took charge along with the new secretary of the council, Prof Subrata Ghosh, commerce faculty of City College (North).
In 2020, prior to higher secondary examination, Das declared that strict actions would be taken against those circulating purported images of question papers in WhatsApp groups to disrupt the exams. She also urged the media to reveal the source of any Whatsapp message to the council.
