Maharashtra extends lockdown till June 1 to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the state. The government order issued Thursday said restrictions will be in place until 7 am of said date to "break the chain." New guidelines, such as a compulsory negative RTPCR test for those entering Maharashtra, were included too.
Lockdown in Maharashtra, which was imposed in April as the state saw an exponential increase in COVID-19 infections thereby becoming the worst-affected in India with an average 50,000 cases daily, was expected to end May 15.
Maharashtra is still leading the national count, accounting for 82.51 percent of active cases in India, as per data from the centre. The state has recorded over 52 lakh total cases and over 78000 deaths.
The vaccination programme is underway in the state and the model being implemented has earned wide praise. On Wednesday, the state government announced it was suspending Covaxin inoculation of age group 18-44 due to limited stocks, with only Covishield available for use until further notice.
