A metropolitan magistrate court in Mumbai on Saturday ordered the police to start an investigation into the defamation complaint filed by lyricist-writer Javed Akhtar against actor Kangana Ranaut. Akhtar had reportedly filed a criminal defamation suit against Ranaut before the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate for allegedly making "defamatory and baseless comments" against him during an interview. The court further asked police to submit a report by January 16.

In his complaint, Akhtar alleged that the Queen actor made “baseless allegations” against him in multiple media interviews which caused damage to his reputation that he has built from scratch in the last 55 years. Akhtar also alleged that she mentioned his name while calling attention to a “coterie” existing in the film industry in the aftermath of the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput in June this year.

This is what Ranaut said after the defamation case was filed against her:

Earlier this year, Ranaut also accused Akhtar of calling her home and threatening not to speak of her relationship with Hrithik Roshan. He also asked her to apologise to Roshan, sister Rangoli Chandel had claimed.

Ranaut’s sister Chandel had tweeted “Javed Akhtar ji called Kangana home and intimidated her threatened her to say sorry to Hrithik, Mahesh Bhatt threw chappal on her cos she refused to play a suicide bomber, they call PM Facist, chacha ji aap dono kya ho?”

Earlier, reacting to Ranaut’s statement against her husband, Shabana Azmi had said in an interview to Mumbai Mirror, “Kangana has started believing in her own myth. She says she taught feminism to the film industry, she taught it nationalism. I’m glad she spelled that out because nobody else had noticed! I think she fears the day when she will no longer be in the headlines and so has to keep making outrageous statements to stay in the news. Poor girl, why doesn’t she just do what she is best at, which is acting.”
