A student in Madhya Pradesh died by suicide after an alleged error in her score for the national entrance test for medical colleges, NEET. It was revealed she got 6 out of 720 when she had actually done quite well in the exam, the police said as issued a statement on her death.
According to the police, the young girl who hails from Madhya Pradesh's Chhindwara district was left dejected after she checked her NEET score on the website. Disappointed and dejected, the young girl is said to have taken the extreme step, the police said.
Surprised at how their daughter did not fare well in the exam, despite all the preparation, parents of the academically inclined girl later sent her answer sheet for re-evaluation. The police said that it threw up a significantly higher score - one that could have saved her life.
"Her OMR sheet (answer sheet) for NEET was re-evaluated, and it showed the girl had scored 590 marks," Inspector Sumer Singh said.
NEET led deaths by suicide are tragic and increasing every year. Young girls and boys are deeply affected by their scores in these common tests for engineering and medical colleges. Not only is there cut throat competition to appear and pass these exams, there is also tremendous parental pressure too.
Nearly every year young students die because of dejection in these exams, they consider critical to their careers.
This year, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET was conducted on September 13 amid the coronavirus pandemic and in the shadow of floods in multiple states. Of the 15.97 lakh candidates who registered, an estimated 88 per cent appeared for the exam.
