Viral video that's now gaining traction all over the internet features, Professor Roop Rekha Verma (79) on the streets of Lucknow, the land of the revolution of 1857, keeping the same spirit alive. She is former vice-chancellor of Lucknow University.
The video that is now circulating the internet, featured a 79-year-old, elderly woman found distributing pamphlets on the road of Lucknow. After the video went viral, people recognised the woman as Professor Roop Rekha Verma, a trailblazer in her own capacity, who has served as the Vice-Chancellor of Lucknow University.
Prof. Roop Rekha Verma was seen distributing pamphlets that shed light on the freedom struggle widely known as the Lucknow Seige to people on the streets. The pamphlets are distributed with the sole purpose of keeping the revolution for freedom alive and spreading awareness about the glorious history of Lucknow. The Lucknow Seige was a war between Indian rebel sepoys against the British administration, in the wake of the Quit India Movement in 1857.
Professor Roop Rekha Verma: Fighting For Freedom In True Sense
After the video went viral on the internet, People have been lauding Prof. Verma for her spirit and have called her a true patriot. People also commended her dedication to keeping history unforgotten and stated that the world is alive and running because of people like Verma. A Facebook post that praised Verma for her efforts mentioned her age as 77 years old. Breaking stereotypes of women wanting to keep their age hidden, Verma jokingly replied ''Thank you for telling my age less than 3 years. I am feeling 70 now".
Professor Roop Rekha Verma has been a fierce feminist through and through and is known to have been a vocal advocate of women's rights. She has also served as Professor of Philosophy and Head of the Department at Lucknow University from 1964-2003. She has been a well-known writer and has published more than four dozen research papers. Prof. Verma's interest lies in Philosophical Logic and Epistemology, Social Philosophy, Philosophy of Mind and Metaphysics.
She has served on various academic committees including Aligarh Muslim University, Mahila Samakhya Bhatkhande Music University, and UP Social Welfare Board. Prof. Roop Rekha Verma also founded the Institute of Women's Studies at Lucknow University. She is also a popular activist working for the justice of survivors of violence on Women and communal violence. She was awarded the Begum Hazrat Mahal Award for Communal Harmony and Life Time Achievement Award in 2006.
After retiring from the educational field she has been working for women's rights and is well known for voicing out opinions on women's issues. She founded the social organisation called Saajhi Duniya, also called the Nagrik-Dharam Samaj. Professor Verma is working to spread awareness and bring about independence in its true essence, while keeping the spirit of freedom fighters that fought long and hard for our country's independence.
