Watch: Lucknow Woman Cop Attacked, Injured After Confronting Male Harasser

Woman constable attacked video: A cop in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh was reportedly attacked by a male harasser on the streets after confronting him for passing lewd remarks at her. He hit her across the face with a rod, reports said Monday, leaving her bloodied and seriously injured.

The incident occurred in Aliganj, where the constable was on pink patrol duty to especially thwart cases of gender-based violence. ADCP Prachi Singh, as quoted in Times of India, said a man passing by the uniformed constable passed vulgarities at her following which she tried to resist. This "infuriated" him, leading him to attack the constable with a rod.

The accused was reportedly caught by locals. He was charged on various counts, including for eve-teasing and attempted murder.

He has been identified as one Prabhat Kumar and resides in the area. Reports suggest there were attempts to prevent Kumar's arrest well into the night and that mental health issues were cited as a reason to block the investigation. However, he was arrested Sunday.

The woman cop lives in the same Aliganj locality where the attack occurred and was reportedly admitted to hospital for treatment.

A video of the injured constable severely bleeding while being tended to after the attack has gone viral on social media, drawing wide attention and putting a spotlight on the issue of women's safety. Some reports quoting police claim the male accused allegedly belongs to an influential family and is the son of an advocate.

He is being interrogated by police officials, reports said.

Earlier this year in March, similar reports of molestation and attack on a woman constable surfaced in Dwarka, Delhi. The 25-year-old cop was travelling to work by bus, where she was touched inappropriately by a male passenger. When she resisted, the harasser reportedly attacked her with his helmet and injured her.

Police said bus passengers standing by did not intervene when the horrific episode was unfolding. The accused managed to get away and according to reports from the time, investigation to track him down was still underway.
