Princess Diana: The London Metropolitan Police will not be conducting an investigation into the allegations surrounding the 1995 BBC interview conducted by Martin Bashir with Princess Diana.
The interview on BBC’s Panorama program revealed Princess Diana’s troubled relationship with Prince Charles. In the interview, Diana gave intimate details about her failed marriage with Prince Charles. The interview was watched by more than 20 million people in Britain. Questions about the interview arose along with the interview’s fame.
Princess Diana’s brother Charles Spencer alleged that she had been tricked into partaking in the interview with the use of forged documents. Bashir allegedly forged documents to obtain the interview. In November 2020, Charles Spencer said that BBC failed to apologise for the allegedly forged documents and “deceit” that lead to Diana being interviewed by Bashir.
On March 4, 2021, Scotland Yard stated they would not be conducting a criminal probe into the infamous interview. Scotland Yard commander Alex Murray said, “In recent months the Metropolitan Police Service received correspondence alleging unlawful activity in connection with a documentary broadcast in 1995.”
“Following this detailed assessment and in view of the advice we received, we have determined that it is not appropriate to begin a criminal investigation into these allegations. No further action will be taken,” Murray added. “In this matter, as in any other, should any significant new evidence come to light we will assess it.”
