June 10, 2014. Indian boxer MC Mary Kom and International Para-athlete Deepa Malik amongst 25 of India’s most Inspirational women, were facilitated by the Limca Book of World Records. The World Record Book completed its silver jubilee and dedicated its 25th edition to the cause of Women Empowerment.
MC Mary Kom thanked the organizers and said to NDTV "So proud to be here along with so many great women. Thanks to the Limca book of records for this honour. It is a great honour."
The NDTV report also said that Deepa Malik who has already won medals in swimming, javelin, discus throws and shot put is paralyzed below her chest. She underwent three major spinal surgeries and 183 stitches between her shoulder blades in 1999. Since she has already set four records earlier, she said that that she felt at home at the facilitation function. She was also honoured with the Arjuna Award for her achievements in track and field by the Indian Government in 2012.
The website mentioned that along with them, women from other fields such as Merry Barua (Founder-Director of action for Autism), Padmavathy Bandopadhyay (first woman Air Marshal of the Indian Air Force), Rini Simon Khanna (a noted Indian television news anchor), Geeta Seshamani (animal welfare activist), Laila Tyabj (designer, writer and chairperson of DASTKAR - a society for crafts and craftspeople), Dr Sunitha Krishnan (human rights activist, founder of Prajwala - a pioneering anti-trafficking organisation), Delhi's brave heart, Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi, and many others were also felicitated for their services in their respective fields.
