In Arunachal Pradesh villagers stripped stripped a woman, her hair cut off and the video was put on the internet because she eloped with another man. This comes a few weeks after the gruesome Hathras gang rape case where a young girl from Dalit community was brutally raped and murdered by four upper caste men.
The woman who eloped, as per a media report, was in a bad marriage and suffering domestic assault by her husband on a daily basis.
News18 reports, that the night she was assaulted, "almost whole of the village gathered while some elderly women pulled Ranjana out of the vehicle and ripped apart her clothes as soon as she reached Nitul's village." This incident has been noted by Lekang's Women Welfare Association of Narcotics Cell.
A video of the brutal assault, in which the woman is seen being stripped naked, her hair chopped, and beaten, is being circulated on some social media platforms.
Patriarchy is so deeprooted that it doesn't spare women. In this case, women of the village were just as involved in 'punishing' the girl and throwing her in a 'room without clothes' to spend the night.
Ruby Deuri, secretary of Women Welfare Association of Narcotics Cell, Lekang added that villagers decided that assault survivor would never be allowed to get married again. As per Arunachal Times, 15 people have been taken into custody in relation to the matter.
Crimes against women in India are on the rise and domestic abuse is a major reason for that.
