Dr SK Bhandari dies: Renowned obstetrician and gynaecologist SK Bhandari, who delivered Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and her two children, succumbed to COVID-19 in Delhi. She was 86.
The longest-serving doctor at Delhi's Sir Ganga Ram Hospital passed away on Thursday after getting diagnosed with the deadly coronavirus, officials said she was suffering from the virus-related complications, India Today reported. She had served the hospital for 58 years.
In a series of tweets, Priyanka Gandhi shared the news and expressed her grief about the demise of the senior doctor. She wrote, "Even in her late seventies, she would drive early morning to the hospital herself." Calling her a "leader to the end", Gandhi added that the gynaecologist "upheld every noble trait of humanity". She further claimed that "as a woman", she will always respect and admire her. "A friend I will always miss," she posted on Twitter.

Delhi-based Bhandari was admitted to the hospital two weeks back for some heart-related issues but tested positive for COVID-19 while undergoing treatment, said the hospital chairman, Dr DS Rana. He also mentioned how the dreaded infection had a deep impact on her health and worsened the exiting issues she was suffering from.

According to him, Dr Bhandari, who had received both the doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, passed away at 2 pm on Thursday. She was the pioneer of the gynaecology and obstetrics department in the hospital and had been serving COVID-19 patients during the first wave of the pandemic. She is survived by a 97-year-old husband, a retired IAS officer, and a daughter, who is also a doctor. Her husband is also currently in the ICU after he tested positive for the virus and he has not been informed about his wife's death yet, Dr Rana said.
