UP Law Student Alleges Chinmayanand Raped Her For A Year, Files Plaint

The Saharanpur law student, who went missing a day after uploading a video on social media claiming evidence against former minister Chinmayanand for alleged sexual harassment and who was recently found by Delhi Police, has now alleged that he raped her several times for a year. She talked to the media in Delhi on Monday when she said, “Swami Chinmayanand raped me and has been sexually assaulting me for the last one year… The harassment started after I started staying at the (law college) hostel.”

She also alleged that despite approaching Saharanpur police, they did not register her complaint against him. She had spoken about this even in her video that went viral on August 27 where she cried, “Modi Ji, please help me, he is a sanyasi and is threatening that the police, DM and everyone else is on his side and no one can harm him. I request you all for justice.” The girl is a student who is pursuing LLM from SS Law College in Saharanpur. And the former minister of state and three-time MP, Chinmayanand is the director of the college.

“On Sunday, the SIT questioned me for about 11 hours… I told them about the rape… I told SIT officials that Chinmayanand had sexually assaulted me for the last one year. I told them that I had filed an FIR against Chinmayanand on charges of rape at the Lodhi Colony police station in Delhi… The Uttar Pradesh police should lodge an FIR against Chinmayanand on rape charges and arrest him,” she said.

The SIT is headed by Inspector General Naveen Arora and it was set up by the Uttar Pradesh government on a Supreme Court directive. It had called the girl’s family members on Sunday to record their statement.

Like she had said in the video that she has evidence to prove that Chinmayanand harassed her, she reiterated it in front of the SIT team saying that she has proof in the hostel room which has been sealed. “I have all the proof. The hostel room should be opened,” she said.

She further revealed that when her father went to register the complaint with the Shahjahanpur District Magistrate Indra Dev Singh, he threatened him. The survivor has now filed the complaint with the Delhi Police. A senior Delhi Police official said they received a complaint at a police station in a south district which has been forwarded to the special investigation team of the UP Police, India Today reported.

“The Delhi Police has registered this complaint at the Lodhi Road police station and has forwarded it to Shahjahanpur police, which is not registering the rape case,” she said.

The SC took a suo moto cognizance of the case after female lawyers brought this matter to the knowledge of the apex court. It immediately directed the state government to probe charges levelled against the BJP leader by the girl.

The girl went missing on August 24 right after publishing the video on Facebook. She was found a week later in Rajasthan. The SC bench comprising of Justice R Banumathi and AS Bopanna directed the Delhi Police to not let anybody meet the girl until the bench does.

Chinmayanand has filed a cross-complaint against the girl for maligning his image and has called the allegations against him fake and a conspiracy against him. The former minister isn’t new to criminal cases, as in November 2011 he was charged with rape after a girl who had lived at his Ashram for several years accused him. However, the Yogi Adityanath government in March this year had filed a plea to withdraw the case. But in May, a local court rejected it.
