Lata Mangeshkar Critical: Veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar's health condition has deteriorated again. She is critical, her doctor at the Breach Candy Hospital said. She was hospitalised last month on January 11 after testing positive for Covid-19. The statement from Dr Pratit Samdani read, “Veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar’s health condition has deteriorated again, she is critical. She is on a ventilator. She is still in ICU and will remain under the observation of doctors.”
As per reports, she recovered from COVID-19 and pneumonia. She was taken off the ventilator but remained in the ICU.
She was born on September 28, 1929. With a career spanning over seven decades, she has been the recipient of several awards including Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Dada Saheb Phalke Award, and multiple National Film Awards. She is known for lending her voice to thousands of songs in over 1,000 Hindi films as well as in various regional and foreign languages.
She scripted history in 1974 and registered her name in Guinness Book of Records for being ranked as the most recorded artiste in the history. In 1942, she recorded her first song ‘NaachuYaa Gade, Khelu Saari Mani Haus Bhaari’ for a Marathi film Kiti Hasaal with composer Sadashivrao Nevrekar.
In 1963, she performed, ‘Ae mere watan ke logo’ in front of the then India Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru in the memory of the martyred soldiers of Indo-China war. As per reports, the rendition brought tears to his eyes.
As a playback singer, she has given her voice to actors like Vaijayanti Mala, Hema Malini, Madhuri Dixit and Preity Zinta.
She recorded a series of hit songs across various genres. This included both solo and in collaboration with great male singers like Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi and Manna Dey among others. Besides Hindi, she has recorded songs in 19 other Indian languages also.
She was also honoured as “Daughter of Nation” on her 90th birthday.
