A Punjabi couple popularly known as the Kulhad Couple for selling pizza served in kulhad, or earthen cups, became famous on social media after videos of their shop garnered millions of viewers online. The cart is being run by a husband-and-wife couple, Sehaj Arora and Gurpreet Kaur.
The couple found themselves embroiled in controversy after an obscene clip featuring the couple in a compromising position surfaced on the internet. Sehaj Arora termed the clip as "fake" and “AI-generated” and filed a complaint with the police.
Kulhad Couple Controversy: What We Know
The couple gained popularity for selling pizza on Jalandhar Street and serving it in Kulhad, or earthen cups. They shared videos of themselves preparing the pizza, which were widely shared on social media. The couple also shared how they met and fell in love before tying the knot on their social media handle.
On Instagram, Arora released a video alleging that the video was “fake”. He explained that 15 days ago he received a message on Instagram that contained the video. The user had blackmailed Arora for money and threatened to release the video online if he failed to comply.
Arora said that he decided not to give the money, and he had also gotten busy as his wife was due to give birth. The couple had a baby girl earlier this week. However, the person who blackmailed him released the video after Arora failed to give the demanded money. Following that, Arora approached Jalandhar police station number 4 and filed a complaint.
Arora also stressed in the video that it was completely fake and could have possibly been generated using artificial intelligence. He also appealed to people not to share the video.
In another video, Arora, who seemed visibly emotional, explained how the video had affected the couple's lives and vehemently denied any wrongdoing and claimed that the individual who released the video not only betrayed his trust but also tried to extort money from him.
He further explained how the video had taken a toll on the personal lives of the couple and how the birth of their daughter, a time of immense joy, was overshadowed by the controversial video, adding that his home is engulfed in sorrow.
An arrest has been made regarding this issue, but no official statement has been released yet.
Technology In The Wrong Hands Seems Scary, Calls For Combat Measures!
While many netizens empathised with the Kulhad couple and denounced the incident as shameful and disturbing, this also sparked a discussion over the couple’s privacy breach, and some voiced their concerns about the potential harm of sharing personal content online in the digital age.
It is saddening to come across news where new parents who are supposed to be celebrating the birth of their child are going through such a traumatic and depressing phase. Having to experience something like this as a new mother seems terrifying.
This also makes one wonder if they could ever have an online presence without having to be threatened by possible predators misusing their face or identity or getting into any scandals. And it's not just predators that we have to be worried about - it's people who are around us. Why do people circulate such videos? Is it too much to respect someone's privacy? With social media having become a part of our lives, coming up with measures to ensure an individual's privacy is the need of the hour.
How can someone be so inhumane as to record a private video of a couple and use it to blackmail them? Can people stoop down any lower? It’s disheartening to see some people equipped with technical knowledge misusing skills that could be put to good use. When are such people going to get over this sadistic mentality of using others' private lives against them?
