Kolkata launches boat library: On India's 72nd Republic Day, the city of Kolkata saw the launch of its first-ever children's library on a boat. The library, set up by the West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) in collaboration with a heritage book store in the city, will also host events such as storytelling, dramatised readings, poetry sessions, book launches, music and more in future.
This initiative will enable children to select from as many as 500 books in English as well as Bengali on the 'Young Readers’ Boat Library, an official said on Tuesday.
The idea behind this moving boat library is to give young readers an access to a good collection of books while they sail through the city. “The boat library would take people on a three-hour-long trip,” an official revealed. Adults can enjoy this ride for Rs 100 while the cost for children is Rs 50.
The journey on boat library will commence from Millenium Park and will travel all the way to Belur Math jetty and back. With three trips scheduled on weekdays, the boat also provides a facility such as free Wi-Fi to its riders.
