Indian billionaire entrepreneur Kiran M Shaw is the first Indian woman Foreign Member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) in 55 years. This is for her development of affordable biopharmaceuticals and the biotechnology industry in India. Election to the NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer.

Shaw is a pioneer of the Indian biotech sector. She is the founder-chairperson of Biocon. It is a Bengaluru-based biopharmaceutical company. She also holds key positions in various educational, government and industry positions. She is also a member of a high-level expert board of India’s Department of Biotechnology.

Indian billionaire entrepreneur Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is the first Indian woman Foreign Member of the National Academy of Engineering in 55 years.

The newly elected class was formally inducted during a ceremony at the NAE’s annual meeting in Washington DC on October 6. “This is a huge honour. I am humbled to be elected to an institution that provides the leadership and expertise for numerous projects focused on the relationships between engineering, technology, and the quality of life.” Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw said.

She was also named in Forbes magazine’s ‘World’s 100 Most Powerful Women’ and Fortune’s ‘Top 25 Most Powerful Women in the Asia-Pacific region’.

That's not all. In the ‘Medicine Maker Power List’ 2018, she was ranked one in the Business Captains category.

The list is an index of the 100 most influential people the world over in medicine. Since 2015, Shaw has been among the top 10 in the list. She was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences in 2006.

She has also established a 1,400-bed medical centre in Bengaluru. It is specially designed to deliver affordable cancer care to patients. She also led to the inception of a non-profit research institute dedicated to treating diseases.
