The Miami Marlins, an American professional baseball team named Kim Ng as their new general manager on Friday, making her the first woman to hold the position in any of the major men’s sports leagues in North America. Kim Ng is a long-serving baseball executive. What makes her appointment even more admirable is that she was turned down for a similar job by at least five other teams over the past 15 years.
Fifty-one-year-old Ng previously worked as an assistant general manager with Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees. She then joined the Major Baseball League as a vice president of baseball operations in 2011. In her one hour long introductory press conference she said, “I got calls and text messages from guys that I’ve known over the years who were just so excited to tell their daughters and wives.” She further added, “And then I got voicemails from friends and front office executives with tears, just so happy that I had broken through, but really more for the sport and more about what it meant for us in society.”

Ng has over 30 years of experience as an executive in this field has earned a win for women everywhere. She started her baseball career as a Chicago White Sox intern in 1990, and for the past nine years as a senior vice president for Major League Baseball. She is also believed to be the second person of Asian descent to lead an M.L.B. team. The first was Farhan Zaidi, who was born in Canada to parents from Pakistan, was the Los Angeles Dodgers’ general manager from 2014 to 2018, as reported by Tribune.
