Trans Man Zahad Becomes The First In India To Deliver A Baby; Partner Ziya Delighted

A transgender couple based in Kerala, Ziya and Zahad, have given birth to a baby at a government hospital in Kerala. Zahad, who was carrying the baby becomes the first trans man in India to deliver a baby. The couple haven't revealed the gender of the baby yet. "This is the happiest day of my life. I received several hurtful messages. The birth of our baby is our reply to them. I thank everyone who supported us," Zahad's partner Ziya told the ANI. "Both the baby and Zahad are doing well," added Ziya.

A few weeks ago, Ziya announced on Instagram that this is the first time a trans man has conceived in India. Ziya, 21, who was designated male by birth, transformed into a woman. Zahad, 23, who was designated female at birth, transformed into a man. The couple had been living together for the past three years. Zahad is eight months pregnant now.

Zahad, who was undergoing the transition process, paused in between to conceive a baby. Doctors from the Kozhikode Medical College assured the couple that conceiving was not physically challenging since they were both transitioning genders.

According to a report by Manorama, the couple had earlier planned to adopt a baby, but the procedure was challenging for them as they were a transgender couple. Since Zahad’s gender transition was still underway and he was still biologically female, the idea of conceiving a baby naturally occurred to them. While Zahad was initially reluctant to revert to femininity, Ziya's desire to become a mother changed his mind.

Kerala Trans Man Pregnant

Ziya, a classical dancer from Kozhikode, said, "We thought our lives should be different from other transgenders. Most transgender couples are boycotted by society and family. We wanted a baby for ourselves because we wanted to leave something behind in the world."

Zahad, who is from Thiruvananthapuram, works as an accountant and is currently on maternity leave. The couple had left their respective families due to their gender identities.

Ziya said that the doctors at the government medical college in Kozhikode have been very supportive. "Doctors have told us not to reveal more about the insemination process," added Ziya. Zahad is due to deliver the baby next month in the same hospital. Since Zahad’s breasts have been removed, the couple hopes to feed the baby breast milk from the milk bank at the hospital.

Ziya is continuing hormone treatment to become a transwoman. Zahad will resume treatment to become a transman six months or a year after delivery. The couple's maternity photoshoot is winning hearts on Instagram. Amid the ongoing journey to change genders, Ziya and Zahad are excitedly looking forward to embracing their journey into parenthood.
