News of a Kerala teen girl shot dead in the United States, allegedly by a bullet that pierced through her roof while she was asleep, has sent shockwaves. The Montgomery police have initiated an investigation into the death of 19-year-old Mariam Susan Mathew and proceedings are reportedly underway to get her body back to her native Indian state.
Mathew was sleeping at home when a bullet, allegedly from the floor above her, cut through her ceiling and hit her. She was declared dead on the spot, according to reports on Monday.

As per The News Minute, Mathew's parents were woken up during the night by the sound of the bullet but went back to sleep without checking in with their daughter. When the teen did not come out of her room the next morning, they opened her door to find her bloody.
Arrests in the case have not been made yet. A public viewing and funeral for Mathew was scheduled to be arranged in Alabama, reports say.

Soumya Santosh, a 32-year-old woman from Kerala, was killed in May this year during a missile attack in the Israel-Palestine conflict. She was a caregiver for the elderly and was based in Ashkelon, which is near the disputed Gaza Strip. As per reports, she was on a video call with her husband, who was back home in Kerala with the couple's son, when a rocket launched by Palestinian militants hit the house of the woman she cared for. Both women could not make it out alive.
Santosh's death was mourned by Israeli leaders, with President Reuven Rivlin conveying his condolences directly to her family in Kerala. Her mortal remains were sent back to India and her family was given compensation of four lakh rupees by the Kerala government. More on Santosh here.
