Some medical students from Kerala recently attended a gender politics class where men and women were made to sit in different groups, separated by a curtain. The instructors of the class are known for propagating homophobic and transphobic ideas, which also sparked concerns on social media, when the picture began doing rounds.

A photograph of students from Thrissur Medical College Hospital attending a gender politics class where the male students were separated from female students with a curtain has gone viral. A Mujahid Students Movement (MSM) leader shared the photograph on social media and was criticised for hosting a gender politics class while separating the students on the basis of gender.

Meanwhile, the medical college authorities have clarified that the class was organised by a religious group and the college has no connection with it. The authorities further added that the event took place outside of the college campus.

The students’ union of the college released a statement on their social media page that said, “Neither the college administration nor the college union has any role in the conduct of such classes. The college does not encourage such acts. We always stand by progressive thinking”.

Medical students separated by curtain: Regressive much?

Student Federation of India (SFI) State President Anusree told PTI, “Students with high educational qualifications becoming part of such campaigns are a matter of concern. SFI views this as a major challenge.

The Kerala Sasthra Sahitya Parishad, which claims to be a progressive people science movement in the state condemned the incident. The office-bearers of the Parishad observed, “Those who took the class did not explain why there was a curtain and those who attended the class did not question the need of a curtain.”

The students reported that the class touched on the topics of gender politics and the LGBTQIA+ community, also pointing out the dangers of conducting a class with homophobic and transphobic ideas on a group of medical students.

One student spoke to The News Minute and said, “We had a grand celebration for Pride Month on campus this time. I personally feel that such conservative, toxic ideas should not be injected into students, especially medical students.”
