During the 69th annual general body meeting of the Kerala Judicial Officers Association (KJOA), held at the prestigious  HC auditorium, Chief Justice Desai made a momentous announcement that has been long-awaited and highly anticipated.

For over five decades, women judicial officers have adhered to a dress code that, while traditional, has often proven to be impractical and uncomfortable. The standard attire consisted of the traditional sari, accompanied by a white collar band and a black gown. While this attire is undoubtedly elegant, it poses significant discomfort, particularly when these dedicated officers are required to preside over courtrooms for extended periods.

Embracing Comfort and Modernity

Recognizing the genuine need for change, a committee of esteemed judges was appointed by the Kerala High Court to thoroughly examine the representation put forth by the women judicial officers.

The officer's request was simple yet profound: the permission to wear attire that is more comfortable and suited to their roles. Specifically, they sought the freedom to opt for churidars, sleeve shirts, and pants while carrying out their judicial duties.

A Welcoming Change

The decision to grant this request marks a seismic shift in the approach to the attire of women judicial officers. By allowing them to embrace modern, comfortable clothing choices, the Kerala High Court acknowledges the importance of ensuring ideal working conditions for these officers. This decision is particularly significant in a region known for its hot and humid climate, where the traditional attire could prove extremely uncomfortable during long court sessions.

By allowing individuals to dress in a manner that is conducive to their comfort, the court aims to create a more welcoming environment for everyone involved. This progressive step acknowledges the diverse cultural backgrounds and personal preferences among those who appear in court. Moreover, it promotes a sense of equality and understanding, ensuring that justice is not hindered by outdated traditions or unnecessary discomfort.

As the official communication regarding this decision is set to be released soon, it is indeed an exciting time for the judicial community in Kerala. This progressive step is weaving together tradition and modernity, one stitch at a time, ensuring justice remains accessible, and the pursuit of truth remains unencumbered.
