Katie Couric Makes Docu Film On Gender Revolution

TV news anchor, Katie Couric, has made a documentary for National Geographic, titled Gender Revolution, which will air soon and has already been much talked about. The documentary explores the concept of gender and the fluidity between gender roles, both culturally and sexually.

Along the way, Couric speaks to sex and gender experts, students, transgender people, and anyone who thinks that their identity cannot be defined in just binary gender roles.

The next battleground is transgender rights, says Couric. She speaks about how many people live in secrecy or never act on their feelings of gender identity. That’s why it is hard to know the specific number of the gender non-conforming population.

Throughout the documentary, Couric tries to meet different kinds of people. She meets a family raising a 5-year-old trans girl, and a married couple in which one spouse is changing their gender.  The 5-year-old was born a boy and later told her family that in her heart and brain, she is a girl. So how does someone know with certainty? Couric says that the fact of the matter is that some kids just know, and that gender is more of a social affirmation. The couple was married 45 years, and the husband told his wife, Linda, that she wants to transition. The couple stayed together, because they felt like they could deal with the challenges. Couric says that the couple is very happy and in love.

She even interviews a transgender teen whose school board refused to let him use the boys' bathroom. So he is going to the supreme court.

She explores questions on whether transgender people’s brains are different, and speaks to scientists and experts who speak about research that does in fact show this.

She even goes to Yale and speaks about the new language of gender. At Yale, when students introduce themselves, they are told to introduce themselves by their pronoun, thus indicating a shift in the way we think about gender.

In an interview with the Today Show, Couric also says that 40 per cent of transgender people attempt suicide and so this is a matter of life and death.

50 per cent of millennials believe gender is binary, Couric says.
